"This Is My Pride and Joy" - 1 Thessalonians 2:13-20

Paul has been using family language and illustrations to describe his relationship with the church. He is not a salesman offloading a product. He is not a philosopher pedaling his ideas. He is not a entrepreneur generating interest. He is more like a parent, feeding and encouraging his children.

In this section Paul continues to reaffirm his love for them in contrast to the accusations that he never really cared about them, and was just looking out for his own interests. Why hadn't Paul come back? Where was he? Did he really care about them or was he just using them for his own advancement?

In a beautiful affirmation, Paul reminds us what is really important in life. What will be the measure of your life? What are the things you want to be known for? What will be the glory and joy of your life's work and energy? The sculptor points to the sculpture. The doctor points to the mended patient. The chef points to the savory tasting dish. The athlete points to the gold medal. And the investor points to the bursting portfolio. "Here is what I have done with my life."

Can I tell you from first hand experience that ministry is challenging in this regard. What does a pastor point to relative to "accomplishment"? Pastors don't produce anything material or collect anything valuable. Or do they?

When Jesus comes and everything on earth is wrapped up, Paul will point to.....people. When the rewards are handed out at the closing ceremony, what will matter? Paul cares nothing about a portfolio, estate, or world record. Paul cares about people, because Jesus and heaven care about people whose lives have been changed. How do you put this to work in your won life? How does this change where you put your energy? I guess you should.....

.....View and See!
