"Keeping the Church on Track" - 1 Timothy 1:1-11
We will take a running leap into the first of the three "Pastoral Epistles", 1 Timothy. The letter is addressed to the individual, but meant to be presented to the whole church that Timothy is serving -- the church in Ephesus.
The church is struggling because the pulpit has been hijacked by teaching elders who have lost their aim. As a result, the church is headed in the wrong direction. "As go the shepherds, so go the sheep". Timothy is left in Ephesus by Paul to get things back on target. If he can get the pulpit focused on sound and certain truth, people will be built up and the church can heal up.
When pulpits are filled with aimless leadership, the church community suffers. the whole of the letter is a reflection of Timothy's job -- get the church back on track, and start with the leadership!
