"Not sure I'm buyin' it..." - 1 Jn 5:6-13
As we draw to a close, in the Book of 1 John is getting the heart of his purpose for writing. He states in clearly:
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Why should a person believe that Jesus is the Son of God? There are plenty of people who don't believe it. There are plenty of people who say, "John, I'm just not sure I'm buyin' it." That's an interesting phrase that means, "I can't intellectually accept what you suggest". Jesus? Son of God?
To discuss this issue, and why people should believe, John turns to the power of "testimony". People that have knowledge or experience that we lack can tell us about their experience and influence our decisions. That is what being a witness is all about.
When it comes to life and death and eternity, who is qualified to tell us about it? Let's face it.....whenever the universe began, no humans were there to see it and tell us about it. Even massive telescopes can't get back that far in space/time.
The passage is full of challenges, and full of power. Who can we trust to tell us about life?...
