CCF Homeschool Co-op

EDUCATION MINISTRY BOARD

Responsible for overseeing CCF's co-op ministry, each board member is prayerfully engaged in creating a welcoming and loving environment to assist families in the noble endeavor of homeschooling.

MATT BASINGER

Matt and his family moved to Fluvanna in 2019. Before that he directed a small Christian youth camp in Highland County, VA, called Head Waters Lodge. It was the same camp where he gave his life to the Lord when he was 15. While working on staff he met his wife Karmen. They now have 4 wonderful kids together.

Matt teaches Athletic Conditioning and oversees all the P.E. classes at the co-op. He also teaches the Basic Home Maintenance segment of the Exploratory Wheel. He also helps to teach P.E. to our Kindergarten and First Grade classes.

TOM GUTHRIE

Before God called him into full-time church ministry, Tom worked as a high school teacher and an athletic coach, a volunteer in children’s ministries, and an adult home bible study leader. In hearing the awesome verse-by-verse Biblical teaching on CSN radio, the LORD put a burning desire in Tom’s heart to see the Spirit of God, through the Word of God, change the hearts of His people for His glory.

JENNIFER DAY

Jennifer and her husband Phillip moved to Fluvanna in 2017 from San Diego county, CA. They felt God’s calling to move to VA and settle here proving to be a true blessing. They have raised three daughters all of which also moved to VA to keep their family close. Their two oldest daughters are now married and they have two grandsons and two more grandsons on the way.

Over her years of raising her children, Jennifer gained experience educating in multiple settings. She homeschooled, with and without co-ops, experienced charter schools and public-schools. She also worked for 9 years in an administrative position at a Hybrid private/homeschool 3 days a week. Her heart is to serve the Body of Christ with her gifts and to intercede on Christ’s behalf for the younger generations and their families.

She has a masters degree in Music Performance (oboe) and was also a free-lance musician who taught private music lessons. Gabi has held various administrative positions over the years. Most recently she served as the Personnel and Orchestra Manager for the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra. She has been led by God to serve Calvary Chapel Fluvanna in an administrative capacity as its Homeschool Co-op Coordinator.

HEATHER SAYLOR

Heather has been a part of the CCF family since 2006. She has enjoyed being involved in many aspects of church life, especially women’s Bible studies and fellowship. She is a mom of 4 and has enjoyed the homeschool journey for the last 14 years. Her two greatest joys are “hearing that her children are walking in the truth,” and community with the body of Christ.

Heather also teaches Foundations in Personal Finance here at the co-op.

DANA CATLETT

Dana and her husband, Tim, both originally from Buckingham County, have lived in Fluvanna since 1992. They have three grown children and homeschooled them for 17 years. Dana has a bachelor's degree in English from UVA. Her favorite things to teach to her own kids were history and literature. Now retired from homeschooling, Dana spends her time crunching numbers as an accountant and volunteering in various roles with her church and in the community.

Dana teaches Middle School English Literature at the co-op.

ADRIENNE VANDERVEER

Adrienne Vanderveer graduated from and practiced in the field of Veterinary Medicine as a Licensed Vet Tech for 14 years. Teaching and leading youngsters as the oldest of five girls gave way to similar opportunities in service with children and youth at her church. Later, she had the privilege of facilitating in women’s Bible studies and teaching preschool from her home. She began to discover that her true passion is teaching—‘‘there is no better way to learn and to grow than to do so alongside others”.

Her delight is pointing others to the wonder of our amazing God through creative and engaging activities in Bible, Art, Literature, History and Science. She has home schooled for 16 years, assisted in children’s ministry, and has taught locally at preschools, a small Christian school and a well-established co-op. She also works for and contributes to the writers and developers of a successful history and Biblical history curriculum. She loves being “Mama” to three, adding two new sons-in-law over the past 4 years, wife of police officer/National Guardsman hubby for 32 years and servant in her church fellowship in Fluvanna County.

Adrienne also teaches Explore Creation Science, Medieval World & Church History, Early Modern U.S. & World History, Great Little Words of Art, and Great Words of Art here at the co-op.

Caroline Anderson

Theater

Growing up, Caroline was always into theater and musicals at her church and school. She made home videos with her cousin and siblings every summer and put on live performances any chance she got. Caroline performed in many plays and musicals throughout her high school and college years. She studied Vocal Performance and Theater in college for 2 years before she left to move to Chicago where she studied the art of Improvisation. She graduated from Second City and Improv Olympic and moved to Los Angeles to pursue her comedy dreams. Caroline graduated from the Groundlings school of improvisation as well as taking many sketch writing classes. She wrote her own material to produce her own comedy variety show called "The Caroline Anderson Show", and she produced, wrote, directed, casted and acted in 7 of these variety shows. Caroline has also worked as a Tour Guide at Warner Brothers Studios and then moved to a small live event production company 8 years ago, which she continues to work from remotely out of her home in Fluvanna County. Caroline has wanted to get more involved in the community she lives in and be able to teach kids what she has learned over the past 15 years of being an entertainer, and is excited to be able to do this at the Calvary Chapel Homeschool Co-op.

Diane Anderson

Theater

Diane came to know Christ when she was 18 while attending Marshall University and has dedicated her life to serving Him. One of Diane's passions is reaching out to people with disabilities and creating a welcoming place for them to serve and lead within the body of Christ. This passion led her to create a ministry called Access Ministry at McLean Bible Church in 1996 which served children and adults impacted by disability. That ministry led into the development of Jill's House, which provides camps and respite care for children with intellectual disabilities, where Diane still serves as full-time staff. Diane is also an assistant manager at The Kindness Cafe in Charlottesville that employs adults with intellectual disabilities. Diane and her husband Steve have been attending Calvary Chapel Fluvanna since they moved to the Palmyra area in 2020. They have been married for 35 years and raised their 5 kids in Great Falls, VA. They have 3 granddaughters and a grandson due in December. Diane is looking forward to being Caroline's assistant in her theater classes at the co-op!

Dave Blaha

High School World Geography

“Knowing and accepting Christ has given me a clarity and peace I never thought was possible and He has transformed my life in many seen and unseen ways. God has always given me a deep desire to teach Truth to older youth, and there is no more fundamental Truth than Christ. Sharing with youth that a person can live a happy and exciting life under Grace, love the Lord and other people, and obey His commandments without being legalistic... there is no greater joy.”

Dave taught high school history for 20 years, but considered the relationships he developed while coaching high school football and track to have been the biggest blessing of that time in his life. “The other coaches and athletes, they become like family. It can be, in the best of circumstances, a glimpse into the brotherhood found in a Christ-centered group of believers.”

Dave is blessed with his beautiful wife, Amy, and together they have two sons, Brett and Brady.

Mark Brennan

Middle School Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra II, Debate

Mark’s two great passions in life are to love and serve God, and to love and serve others. He shares these passions with his beautiful wife Lisa, to whom he has been married for nearly 35 years. Together they have raised eight wonderful children, homeschooling them for over 20 years. They have also been blessed with 11 grandchildren. Mark was an active-duty Marine for 27 years, worked for the Navy for two years as a contractor, and is also a Virginia certified teacher with five years of teaching experience in the Fluvanna County Public Schools.

Sandy Chenail

She spent most of her adult life working in dentistry - both as a dental assistant and then office manager. She came on staff in October 2019 to work in women’s ministry full time. Margaret Estes

Bible and Memory

Margaret graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in mathematics. After a brief 4-yr career at IBM, she stayed home to raise her 5 children. During that time, she began to teach in various homeschool co-ops and in local private schools, covering math courses from pre-algebra to algebra 2, writing and grammar, and even physics! God has also given her a passion to teach His Word to children, which she has done at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, Calvary Chapel Austin, TX, in Maryland and now at CC Fluvanna. In her spare time, she volunteers with local refugees, bakes, hangs out in coffee shops, and walks or bikes. Her favorite thing to do is travel with her husband of 27 years.

Steve Feden

Exploratory Wheel: Conflict Resolution

Life with God is an adventure! Steve was perfectly content working as a farrier and thought that he would grow old in that trade. He would think, “God, I will gladly teach a Bible study, but don’t make me be a pastor.” It became clear that God had other plans. Pastor Steve has been the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Fluvanna since the fellowship began in 2003. He came into ministry after working as a horseshoer (farrier) for 13 years. Through the influence of CSN radio and the various Calvary pastors who have radio ministries, Pastor Steve began to recognize a calling in his own life. After attending Calvary Chapel Charlottesville and assisting with their 2-3 year old Sunday school, Pastor Steve started Calvary Chapel Fluvanna. Steve lives in Fluvanna County with his wife, Helga.

Jeni Flathers

Literary Analysis & Composition, Upper Elementary Bible Study

Jeni is a devoted wife to Bill and mom to 5 grown children, ages 19 to 38, and proud grandmother to 8 and counting! She received her Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from the University of Illinois. She taught in public schools in Ohio, Maine and Virginia- grades 1, 5, 7 & 8, before becoming a full time stay-at-home mother. The Lord called Bill & Jeni to begin homeschooling their children in 1995, when their oldest was 10 years old, and finally- all 5 have graduated from their homeschool high school! It was the best decision they ever made! While homeschooling she realized how much she was learning along with her kids - and that hasn’t stopped! During those busy years of homeschooling, the family raised many animals on their farm and Jeni was a 4-H Dairy Goat Club leader in Culpeper County, an AWANA teacher for 23 years, and she served as a VBS, Sunday School & Missions teacher for many years. She has participated in many Homeschool co-ops as well as Classical Conversations. Along with the many fun field trips they took, (including traveling all over the U.S. for 18 months in an RV while homeschooling their youngest - talk about awesome field trips!), her favorite homeschool memories are of their years spent working with the farm animals, AND their family read-aloud times where the kids sat, wiggled, and played beside her as she read a lot of great children’s literature to them that she never had the chance to read as a kid, herself!

Liana Haseltine

Volleyball Skills & Drills

Liana graduated from UVA with a degree in biology in 1999, but rather than pursuing a traditional career, for the last 24 years she and her husband Jim have owned and operated a hot air balloon ride business.  This allowed her to be active (who wants to sit at a desk anyway??!) but also to be present for her family and raise her three daughters. In 2019 she decided to explore her passion for encouraging others through fitness, and followed her husband through the process of becoming an ACE certified personal trainer.  Now combining her life experience in sports, teamwork, and practical fitness, she is coaching the calvary chapel volleyball team and is excited to share her knowledge and experience with the young women taking her skills and drills class at the co op!

Nicole Haseltine

P.E.

Nicole has always aspired to be a teacher; she even went to college for it before Covid hit. After Covid put a halt to her college years, she pursued the family business of hot air ballooning! She is also a nanny to two little children and a waitress at Wahoo BBQ. Nicole graduated from Fluvanna County High School in 2019 and participated in sports and athletic training while she was there, and is now the assistant volleyball coach to the Lady Falcons Volleyball Team here at Calvary Chapel Fluvanna. With much experience with kids of all ages, she is excited to encourage and share Jesus with all who take her gym class!

Jane Hermann

Knit/Crochet/Sew

I learned to crochet from my mother at age twelve and to knit in my twenties. Now that I have retired from the corporate world, I have found there to be a large number of people who would like to learn these creative skills. Sewing was part of my high school education and provided me the ability to make clothes for myself and my children over the years. Teaching has always been enjoyable and I’m looking forward to another productive season with students of all ages.

Jayna Marcelli

Study Hall

Jayna and her husband, Domenic have five children and have been homeschooling them for ten years. While three of them have graduated, two of their children will be attending CCHC this year.  Jayna earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut in general studies with an emphasis in Business and Psychology.  In her spare time she enjoys reading, cooking, sewing and knitting.

Stefanie Melton

Creative Writing and Culinary

Stefanie grew up with great southern home cooks in her family, and her love of cooking and baking began when she was still in elementary school.  Along with learning from both her grandmothers and her mom, she has taught herself the ins and outs of preparing a wide variety of foods. She loves all things food, from making it, to photographing it, and of course consuming it! She is excited to share her knowledge and passion with each student.  She is also a wife to Jonathan and mom to 3, Aden, Emma and Cason. Her family has been a part of Calvary Chapel Fluvanna for almost 15 years!  She personally accepted Jesus as her Savior when she was 5 years old and along with cooking, her other passion is teaching God's Word to women and teens.

Debbie Merrow

Around the World for Little Explorers

Debbie and her husband Dave have two grown children and one grandchild. They retired to Lake Monticello about seven years ago from Northern Virginia. She was a teacher in Loudoun County for 24 years. She has a BS degree in Special Education / Regular Education 4th-7th with an endorsement in ESL.  The last 10 years of her career, she taught ESL to Kindergarten students. These were her favorite years and when she observed the Little Explorers class, it reminded her of those times. She not only taught reading, writing and math, but incorporated many lessons about our culture and the culture of other countries. Teaching allowed her to share her faith, and she is so happy to be able to teach in a Christian environment. How exciting to be able to share about all of God's creation in the world through games, song and art. She is grateful for the opportunity and believes this is God’s will for her.
